Funchal is the capital of the island, many visitors consider Funchal as the gateway to the spectacular scenery of Madeira. Described as a floating garden, Funchal is a city of many charms. To learn in greater detail about Madeira’s past, try the Madeira Story Centre and the City Museum. The Modern Art museum houses a decent art collection, while the Sugar Museum details the importance of this commodity in Madeira’s history.
Take a guided boat trip to spot whales and dolphins in the beautiful waters, or charter your own boats for some high seas adventure. For the adventurous and active, take advantage of the great climate and natural beauty and have a go at scuba diving, sea fishing, water skiing, surfing and sailing.
