See the Best of Texas on a Road Trip

Everything truly is bigger in Texas - the roads, the food, the culture, and the sights.  There is no shortage of action along the roads and you’ll see a pleasant mix of city and country life here.

Being the largest state in America, you can choose to do a large road trip around to the cities and sights of your choice, or use a big city (such as San Antonio or Dallas) as a central hub and make a smaller loop around that area.

Starting in Dallas or San Antonio is recommended as both are large international hubs and it will be easy to pick up a car here.

The Heart of Texas

Driving east to west across Texas is a sure way to see what Texas culture and lifestyle looks like.  Start in Dallas, head east towards Fort Worth and visit the Castle of Heron Bay for a bit of history and unique architecture.

Continue west along the I-20 and take the turnoff down to Kickapoo Falls for the scenic and natural falls in Hood, Texas.  The interstate travels right through the middle of Texas, so be sure to have a map with you and find points that interest you along the way.

Odessa will definitely be a stop on your trip - see the Odessa Meteor Crater or stop by the Archaeological Museum in town.

End your journey through the heart of Texas on the very edge of the border in El Paso.  See the zoo, visit the nearby national park, or get a sprawling view from the aerial tramway.

Natural Area

Hill Country is dotted with unique small towns suited for road trippers, so stop along the way and take your time on this trip.

Begin in San Antonio and when you’ve had your fill of the sights, head north to Fredericksburg.  The German heritage remains strong and noticeable in shops and older architecture, making it a unique stop for your road trip.

Get away from the city and towns and experience Enchanted Rock State Natural Area off Highway 16.  The centerpiece of the park is a tall, pink granite mountain over a billion years old.

Get back on the I-35, head north and you’ll find Austin.  Austin is certainly a place you will want to spend some time.  A growing hub for the weird and eclectic, you will find an excellent range of nightlife and music here as well as a vibrant foodie scene.

However you decide to see Texas you are sure to experience something new, weird, or unexpected.
