North Carolina is known for its history, its barbeque, and NASCAR.
What it isn’t known for, but should be, are the amazing roads that take you through old villages, up mountains, and through vineyards. North Carolina is a varied and exciting state for road trips, so buckle up and check out our best places to see on a road trip.
The largest city in North Carolina, Charlotte is the perfect place to start your trip. Discover the NASCAR Hall of Fame, or get a seat to a race if you’re lucky enough to be in town when one’s on. There are many parks, museums, and professional sports teams in action to keep you busy here.
Head west on scenic Route 74 up to Asheville, North Carolina along the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway, a road filled with twists and turns among the trees. Stop and see the grandiose Biltmore Estate, an 8,000 acre estate that rests along the parkway. Explore the grounds, buy a bottle of the chateau’s wine, or even stay the night. Asheville itself has a mountain appeal to it, and is much different than Charlotte.
Continue down Route 74 and head south to Franklin and Nantahala. The road between the two towns is known as the Mountain Waters Scenic Byway, and is worth the detour off the main road to see the beauty.
While on the road, take a turn to Wayah Bald and visit an old stone fire tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. From the mile-high top, you can see four different states.

Here, you can hike, camp, or drive the roads. The roads itself are fun to drive and the vistas are unmatched. Drive along the Greenbrier and see the most colourful section of flower and plants - a perfect location for picture opportunities. In the fall, the foliage on the surrounding trees is absolutely stunning.
Continue north through the mountains for the more relaxing and fun route up to Winston-Salem. Visit the Old Salem Historic District, a colonial community founded by the Moravians in 1766.
Finally, visit Raleigh, the City of Oaks and capital of North Carolina. A sharp turn from the old historic villages, Raleigh has universities, big stadiums, and the most live music in North Carolina. You’re sure to find something you love on your stop here.
Whether you’re looking for adventure or history, North Carolina has it all on the roads.
